NASA Science Competition - Balloon Flights

NASA announced a competition for school kids in 2010 to participate in a science experiment submission, which if selected will be flown to Stratosphere on their high altitude balloon from the Glen Johnson Center in Ohio. Team ESA took up the challenges and mentored a group of 4 students from Tooele county in Utah.

Our experiment was based on a theory that increased water vapor in the stratosphere results in increased transfer of heat, thereby increasing Global Warming. We guided the students to structure the payload to help measure this heat transfer in stratosphere and log that on to the on-board data logger. Our submission was selected in the final 4 across the United States schools and we were invited to the NASA canter in Ohio to fly our equipment (payload) on a NASA balloon.

Here are some of the pictures from the preliminary testing which was done by Team ESA.
